Día de muertos – Mexican Day of the Dead Altar

2.11.–10.11.2024

Welcome to discover the celebration of the Day of the Dead in Mexico.

On 2 November, the Helinä Rautavaara Museum will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead. Curated by artists Rosamaría Bolom and Paola Nieto, we will build an altar of remembrance together and gather to remember loved ones who have passed away.

In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is celebrated between October and November. Families build altars in their homes to remember the loved ones who have passed away. According to traditional beliefs, the dead come to visit their relatives, and families place on the altar favourite foods and objects of the visitors, as well as decorations, religious elements and candles to guide the deceased on their journey.

The altar will be built on Saturday 2 November and will be on display until 10 November 2024. The Day of the Dead altar is produced in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico. The City of Espoo has supported the event.
