From visitor to author

Opening up collections to new interpretations

The museum has invited young adults and families with children from African backgrounds living in Finland to explore and reinterpret the museum’s Africa collection. The aim of the project is to develop and test community-based and decolonial ways of producing, communicating and opening up information on cultural heritage materials. At the same time, we want to raise museum visitors’ awareness of sustainable development and the role of culture as part of it.

The workshops have been held between 2024 and 2025 and the new narratives that emerged will be integrated into the collection exhibition. 25 people have participated in the joint work.

The project is funded by the National Board of Antiquities.
